Princess Charlotte compared to one much older royal – ‘uncanny’

Royal fans have noted the similarity between Princess Charlotte, seven, and the Queen Mother when she was a young girl. After photos of Charlotte and the young Elizabeth were shared on social media, some fans said the resemblance was “uncanny”.

Glamis Castle has been the home of the Lyon family since the 14th century and was the childhood home of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, or the Queen Mother, as she was later best known.

Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth II’s sister, was born at the Castle in 1930 as the Queen Mother was staying there during the time of her birth.

Situated beside the village of Glamis in Angus, Scotland, the Castle is open to visitors who can explore both the interiors and the grounds. Posting on Twitter today, the Castle’s staff shared an image of the young Elizabeth as she had been while she lived in the property as a child.

Beside this was a photo of another royal – Princess Charlotte.

The photos’ caption read: “The daughter of the 14th Earl of Strathmore, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon married the Duke of York and became Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

“When looking at photos of a young Lady Elizabeth we found a familial resemblance with her great-great-granddaughter, Princess Charlotte.”

The post gained hundreds of likes and was inundated with comments as many others agreed with Glamis Castle – that Charlotte did indeed look like Elizabeth.

Hannah Brown wrote: “Princess Charlotte’s resemblance to her great grandmother, Queen Elizabeth has always been evident. Right down to her royal wave.”

Princess Charlotte has been likened to Kate, Princess of Wales, in recent days too. Body language expert Judi James shared that the young royal has picked up a gesture from her mother that has become a habit.

The gesture was noticed for the first time when Charlotte was greeted by her new school’s headmaster on her first day at Lambrook school. At the time, Charlotte was spotted touching her hair as she goes to shake the headmaster’s hand. 

Judi James analysed this, saying: “It’s Charlotte showing the shyness signals here, touching her hair in that gesture that sweetly mirrors her mother and getting a fond stroke on the back of her hair to nudge her into her handshake with the headmaster.”

This is similar to the way Kate used to touch her hair when she was nervous – especially when she first entered the Firm when she married Prince William in 2011. 

Judi said: “Back then she [Kate] looked shy and inexperienced, performing anxiety hair touches while she leaned backwards slightly and held her bag up in a barrier gesture. Today we have a confident, very regal-looking woman who is clearly hosting and putting her guests at ease with her techniques of active listening and even touch rituals.”
