“I loved getting that award, because – you know – I think he thought I was there to get an award for my work with the Spice Girls.

“But it wasn’t anything about the Spice Girls; it was about the stuff I’d been doing to create awareness for domestic violence with my charity, Women’s Aid.”

Mel became a patron of the charity Women’s Aid in 2018 after leaving what she has described as an abusive relationship.

The charity Women’s Aid describes itself as “a grassroots federation working together to provide life-saving services in England and build a future where domestic abuse is not tolerated.”

Mel rose to fame in the 1990s as a member of the Spice Girls, alongside fellow bandmates Mel C, Emma Bunton, Geri Horner and Victoria Beckham.

The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show returns tomorrow at 6.30am on BBC Radio 2.
