Prince Charles once grew a long beard and it just looks really strange

While it usually royal women, such as The Queen and The Duchess of Cambridge, who make the headlines when they change something about their appearance, royal men have done so in the past.

Over the years, everyone from the late Duke of Edinburgh to Prince William have experimented with their looks by growing a beard, and have often been met with a outpouring of support when they debuted their changed appearance.

The Prince of Wales is also someone who has grown a beard in the past and was pictured sporting it on several occasions in the 1970s.

The Prince of Wales dabbled with his appearance during the 1970s and was pictured on numerous occasions with a full Naval beard.

Prince Charles served in the Royal Navy between 1971 and 1976 and there are several well-known rules that are linked to having any facial hair while serving.

According to Forces.net, regulations for the British Army state: “Beards and whiskers are only to be worn with authority, which will usually be granted only on medical or religious grounds, or where tradition permits.

“The appearance of the beard and whiskers is to be neat and tidy. Sideburns are not to descend below the mid-point of the ear and are to be trimmed horizontally.”

Many believed that it was grown in an attempt to disguise his identity while on Naval exercises in Alaska in 1975. In 2008, it was pointed out that his oldest son, Prince William, was following in his father’s footsteps as he also grew a beard during an SBS mission before he entered the RAF.

It is safe to say that when pictures of Prince Charles’ beard resurfaced online, royal fans were confused as to why he ever shaved it off.

One commenter wrote: “How did he not keep it? Looks like proper English landed gentry.”

Another agreed and pointed out the similarity he shares to Prince Harry: “He sort of looks like his son the Duke of Sussex here. It’s really cool. This is a good find.”

A final fan quipped: “He looks waaaaay better with a beard!!!”

Prince Charles’ beard was not his last foray into public disguises as he previously donned a hilarious costume to kept his identity private.

During a 1980 skiing trip to Klosters in Switzerland, the prince donned a hilarious fake nose, moustache, glasses and a hat.

The eye-catching look likely attracted more attention then if he had gone without, but it is certainly hilarious!
