Pride History Month: The Joyful Student Conference at Woodbridge, Zara Mirza WCHS
Stepping into the hall, you’re met with bursts of colour on every table, balloons and flags flying, and a genuinely warm, lively, and proud community of students from across a dozen schools in Redbridge.
Students were first addressed by Mr. Khan, the Founding Director of the event, who certainly got the crowd going with a massive pride cheer to start the day off! Jas Athwal, leader of Redbridge Council, followed with an inspiring speech about the progress made and still to come for the LGBTQ+ community.
Students mingled with peers in workshops that ranged from contributions of the queer community to STEM to producing an LGBTQ+ action plan for schools in Redbridge to become more inclusive and supportive of the community. There were also more unconventional activities, like creating the ideal drag teacher, resulting in many highly creative drawings (and names). Other activities involved developing a timeline of significant LGBTQ+ events in the UK and a well-being exercise to promote self-care.
Hana Gardiner, a student at the event, said, “I found the event very engaging and fun, while also bringing up important issues that needed to be discussed. I thought the panellists were especially good, as they were insightful and offered useful advice to people who may be struggling, and that is what the cause is all about.”
The day finished with a panel led by Mr. Khan, where five speakers from various backgrounds shared their experiences, advice, and guidance for the students.
Overall, the end of such an empowering month could not have been marked better than with a day full of laughter, camaraderie, and pride!
