The areas – which all boast gorgeous scenery – all appeared the most in Instagram hashtags, proving they really are picture perfect.

A spokesperson for the research said: “To locals and visitors alike, it’s no surprise that Salcombe places first.

If wildlife enthusiasts are searching for a holiday destination, Oban could provide the perfect staycation spot.

In western Scotland, the seaside town offers various opportunities for animal spotting and is home to some of the most elusive UK wildlife, according to researchers.

“You might be lucky enough to see basking sharks, dolphins, or even whales on one of the town’s ocean safari boat tours,” They added.

Porpoises and seals can also spotted while visiting the coastal town.

In third place was Buxton, a spa town sitting on the edge of the Peak District.

Luxurious thermal spas surrounded by the rolling hills of the countryside attract visitors all year round.

If music is your passion, there is even an opera house fringed by busy cafes, restaurants and bars, perfect for a night on the town.

The spokesperson said: “For those wishing to brave the chill and venture into the stunning Peak District countryside, nearby Poole’s Cavern with its ancient limestone formations is well worth the trip.”
