Premiership ruckman announces AFL retirement

Greater Western Sydney ruckman Shane Mumford has retired from the AFL a second time, after 216 games and one premiership.

After the big-framed AFL journeyman called time on his career due to a foot injury following the 2017 season, he had a year off but mounted a comeback in 2019.

Mumford has since featured in 44 games over three years, including GWS’s 2019 grand final defeat to Richmond.

The 35-year-old will remain at the Giants as ruck coach.

Mumford’s time at GWS followed 21 games with Geelong and 79 matches with Sydney, which saw him win the 2012 premiership with the Swans.

“My time on the football field has come to an end for now,” Mumford said.

“I’m incredibly proud of all that I’ve achieved across my career in the game, including winning the ultimate, a premiership, in 2012.

“I’m looking forward to remaining at the club and continuing to coach and mentor our promising ruck division.”

Giants general manager of football Jason McCartney applauded Mumford’s tremendous career.

“Over 200 AFL games in the physical manner and the position in which Shane played is a wonderful achievement,” McCartney said.

“From the rookie list to 13 seasons at the elite level, including a premiership, Shane has achieved a lot in his career.

“He arrived at the Giants in just our third season, and he has had a monumental impact on our club.

“Shane takes up a ruck coaching role with the club as well as working across the academy and with the club’s partners and coterie groups.

“Our young rucks have already learned so much from Shane and they’ll continue to flourish under his tutelage in future seasons.”

Mumford was drafted to Geelong via pick 57 in the 2007 rookie draft.

He arrived at the Giants ahead of the 2014 season and took out the club’s best and fairest in his first campaign with GWS.
