Prankster’s brilliant gaffe tricks flyers into thinking they’re at wrong airport

Shocked passengers flying into London Gatwick airport this weekend have been tricked into thinking that they were landing somewhere else. An enormous sign with the words ‘Welcome to Luton’ had been laid out in large white letters in a field on the flight path towards the runway.

Flyer Abbey Desmond, from Essex, panicked at first when she noticed the sign about 90 seconds before landing, admitting that her heart ‘skipped a little’ when she looked out of the window. But she appreciated the prankster’s sense of humour afterwards.

Tweeting to her 18,000 followers, she penned: “Flying in to Gatwick, just before landing this is what is out the left window… great prank, deffo at Gatwick.”

She later joked: “I was like ‘oh no, not Luton’. It would have been so typical of me to book the wrong airport back as well.” There is around 60 miles in distance between London’s Luton and Gatwick airports.

The lettering appears to be laid out in a field a little east of Gatwick’s South Terminal close to Shipley Bridge. Abbey’s Tweet has since gone viral and amassed more than 23,000 likes. It has also been retweeted by more than 1,700 times.

The stunt has been claimed by YouTube prankster Max Fosh, who apologised if anyone was seriously thrown by the incident. Fans have seen the funny side, with one saying: “This is brilliant.” A second added: “It’s the little things that make you laugh.”
