‘Powerful anti-ageing’ homemade treatment recommended by skin expert

The beauty industry is overwhelmed with treatments and products that claim to turn back time and reverse signs of ageing. Express.co.uk spoke exclusively to Harley Street skin expert Lorena Öberg about an anti-ageing treatment that you can make at home, using a spice commonly found in your kitchen cupboard.

Lorena explained: “One of the most powerful and proven anti-ageing ingredients is probably lurking in the back of your cupboard at home, turmeric.

“Owing its bright colour to the bioactive compound which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant and anti-cancer properties.

“Turmeric is an amazing spice to apply topically to the face to prevent pigmentation problems, discolouration, acne, age spots and sallow skin.

“Working instantaneously, turmeric applied topically on the skin imparts a radiant glow and leaves skin feeling soft and smooth to the touch. Not bad from a £1 packet of spice!” She remarked.

In terms of its anti-ageing properties, the golden root is said to help diminish the appearance of wrinkles, keep skin supple and improve its elasticity.

It’s also great at brightening the undereye area and works well to reduce any puffiness in the eye area.

For best use, the expert suggested applying turmeric in a homemade face mask. “You can create your own facemask with turmeric powder by mixing a few pinches of the spice with a small amount of aloe vera gel.

“Work it into a smooth paste then apply all over the face, making sure you ensure you avoid the delicate eye area.”

Lorena recommends “leaving it on for 20 minutes then rinsing it off with your cleanser”.

Lorena added: “Although there have been no known side effects of using turmeric on the face, it can leave a slight yellowish residue and sensitive skin types should perform a small skin patch test first.”

As for how often you should apply a turmeric-infused face mask, experts recommend two to three times a week.

Instead of aloe vera gel, you can mix turmeric powder with Greek yoghurt and honey to “synergistically work to heal the skin”.

“In addition, if you suffer from age spots, small brown patches known technically as hyperpigmentation bought on by long-term exposure to the sun and ultraviolet light (causing an over-production of melanin which clumps together forming noticeable spots), there are a number of natural home remedies that you can use to diminish them.”

She revealed: “Raw fruits such as pineapple contain essential enzymes – take a fresh pineapple chunk (not canned) and gently dab it into your age spot – do this once daily for a few months and watch it disappear.

“Fresh lemon juice, due to its citric acid properties, acts as a natural bleaching agent that will help treat the appearance of age spots.

“Also finally, enhance your diet and eat the right foods that help treat your skin from within. Foods loaded with age-fighting antioxidants, vitamins C and E are a must.

“Melons, for instance, are loaded with antioxidants and can boost your SPF.

“Green tea can also protect your skin as it contains active antioxidant compounds that make your skin resistant to premature skin ageing,” Lorena said.
