Port’s iceman delivers upset one-point win

He’s no stranger to kicking the matching winning goal, but this time it was an all-conquering point from Robbie Gray that sealed victory for the Power over the Saints.

After a dynamic start in Cairns, St Kilda restricted Port to a goalless opening quarter before rocketing out to a game-high 19-point lead in the second term.

However, their inaccuracy in front of goal during the second half – which included a shocking run of 10 behinds – left the door open for Port as they chipped away the deficit.

Scraping their second win of the season after Port Adelaide’s worst start in club history, while dowsing the Saints’ best kick off in decades, the 5.13 (43) to 4.18 (42) victory is the second least accurate AFL match on record.

Star forward Max King got the Saints off to the perfect start with the opening goal of the match. The ball then became held in their forward 50, however the Saints failed to punish Port on the scoreboard.

Sparking up in the second half, Gray was moved deeper where he capitalised, scoring 2.2 from his 15 disposals.

In just his second game back from an ACL injury, Kane Farrell converted to bring the Power within a kick as both teams began to pepper the goals.

As Todd Marshall kicked his first of the match to take him to 12.1 this year, scores were all tied with just three minutes remaining.

Both sides fired shots late desperately wanting to convert a goal, but none were successful.

Ultimately, Gray snapped a behind to give the Power a one-point buffer, before taking an intercepting mark just outside 50 to run the clock down.

In all the excitement of the come-from-behind win, there are concerns for young forward Mitch Georgiades who was subbed out at three quarter time with a calf complaint.
