Polyphony CEO Kazunori Yamauchi Hints at “Next” Gran Turismo 8

From the looks of it, the next Gran Turismo, let’s name it Gran Turismo 8, is in development at Polyphony Digital.

At least, that’s what the creator of the popular racing franchise and head of the studio, Kazunori Yamauchi, said during a recent interview with Japanese outlet Game Watch (thanks PlayStation LifeStyle). In the new interview, Yamauchi was asked about the recently-announced PlayStation VR2 version of Gran Turismo 7, which is arriving at the launch of Sony’s new VR headset.

In the final part of the interview, the creator of the Gran Turismo series was asked what the Gran Turismo series is currently lacking and what Yamauchi wants to achieve with the series in the future. The Polyphony CEO answered the question that he actually already has a theme for the “next” Gran Turismo, but he can’t talk about it just yet. We’ve roughly translated the question and answer from Yamauchi down below:

From an amateur’s point of view, “GT7” seems to have achieved all the necessary elements of a driving simulator. However, is there anything you would like to achieve in the future that cannot be achieved with modern hardware, or any elements that are still lacking in Gran Turismo?

“Actually, there is a theme”, the Gran Turismo creator said. ” I am running towards the next one, but I can’t talk about it yet. I am sorry that I can’t talk about it very much (laughs).”

Yamauchi didn’t provide additional details, but we’re pretty sure that GT fans will be interested in the part where the “next” Gran Turismo is mentioned. We’ll update you as soon as more information about Gran Turismo 8 comes in.

Gran Turismo 7 was released back in March of last year for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. The previous installment in the series, GT Sport, was released in 2017 for PlayStation 4.
