Police confirm arrest for ‘racially aggravated public order offence’ at England vs Hungary
The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that an individual was arrested for a ‘racially aggravated public order offence’ during England’s World Cup qualifying clash with Hungary at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday evening. The alleged offence was committed towards a steward.
Supporters were shown clashing during ITV’s live broadcast of the fixture, in which the Three Lions could move a step closer to qualifying for next year’s World Cup in Qatar.
The Football Association have opened an investigation into an incident in the away end at Wembley where Hungary fans were located. They have also reported it to FIFA.
A Metropolitan Police statement read: “Shortly after the start of tonight’s match at Wembley, officers entered the stand to arrest a spectator for a racially aggravated public order offence following comments made towards a steward.
“As the officers made the arrest, minor disorder broke out involving other spectators.
“Order was quickly restored and there have been no further incidents at this stage.”
The FA said: “We are aware of an incident in the away section during tonight’s FIFA World Cup qualifier at Wembley Stadium.
“We will be investigating and will report the incident to FIFA.”
