The long-range Polestar 2 is expected to quickly become the brand’s top-seller despite having a higher price tag than the Volvo subsidiary’s entry model.
Polestar executives predict that the variant will account for about 40 percent of all Polestar 2 sales in Europe. That is because it has the model family’s best range — 320 to 336 miles from its 78-kilowatt-hour battery, combined with a single electric motor.
Polestar expects fleet and business buyers to drive demand for the long-range variant.
By comparison the entry Polestar 2’s price after incentives is 36,000 euros ($42,000), but the range from its smaller 64-kWh battery and its single electric motor is 261 to 273 miles.
The range-topping, dual electric motor Polestar 2, with a 78-kWh battery and a range of 282 to 300 miles, starts at 47,400 euros in Germany but drops to 40,672 euros with incentives. The flagship made it possible for Polestar to provide a higher volume model in key markets such as Germany, the UK, the U.S. and China last year and this year. Prior to the Polestar 2’s 2020 debut the only model the brand had on offer was the low-volume Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid.
Polestar is adding the two lower-cost Polestar 2 variants to better challenge the Tesla Model 3, which starts at 39,990 euros in Germany.
Deliveries of the new Polestar 2 derivative will start in September and October.
