PM caught up in viral TikTok trend using Encanto lyrics

We don’t talk about Bruno, but everyone is talking about Disney hit Encanto – and now the PM has been drawn into the hysteria in a new viral song.

Disney film Encanto is behind the latest TikTok craze, with users twisting the lyrics of soundtrack fave ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ in creative and hilarious ways.

The musical has exploded in popularity since its release, not just among its young intended audience, but for TikTok users who have been producing their own re-enactments to the animated flick’s biggest hits.

From cosplay makeup tutorials, to synchronised dance routines, to a US mum who bears a striking resemblance to one of the main characters, it seems people can’t get enough of the wholesome Disney offering and its many earworm hits.

One user has even added a political spin to her Encanto content.

Aussie star Julia van der Hoeven has garnered over 87,000 likes for her contribution to the trend, in which she renames the song ‘We Don’t Talk About ScoMo’ and waxes lyrical about the Prime Minister’s trip to Hawaii amid the 2020 bushfires and widely-criticised Covid-19 vaccine rollout.

The clip sees the Melbourne-based singer and dancer emulate the characters of the animated film as she belts out lyrics about her frustrations with the Prime Minister, including: “Grew to resent ScoMo always stuttering and stumbling … Ordering one vaccine sort of muttering and mumbling,” and the brutal closing line: “I associate him with the feel of clammy hands”.

Van der Hoeven is one of thousands on the platform who have taken catchy songs from the popular children’s film and run with them for content — many in full costume.

US mum Maribel Martinez has gone viral for her video set to ‘Surface Pressure’, in which she mimics character Luisa’s dance moves and facial expressions to extraordinary likeness.

The 23-year-old has continued cosplaying with the character’s signature red bow, curls, white top and blue skirt for her new-found fans.

Meanwhile, popular TikTok star Luis Lucas’ spirited one-man recreation of the ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ dance sequence has clocked up 2.2 million likes.

It comes as no surprise that the film has infiltrated TikTok.

Ever since the animated flick was released on Disney+, fans have become obsessed with the Lin-Manuel Miranda-written soundtrack, particularly ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’, which many have even dubbed better than Frozen’s ‘Let It Go’.

As reported by Today in the US, ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ was the Number 1 song on Spotify’s Top Songs – USA chart last week, with ‘Surface Pressure,’ another memorable Encanto bop, a few spots below it.

Meanwhile, the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the week of January 29 lists ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ at Number 2, just below Adele’s Easy On Me.

It’s officially surpassed ‘Let It Go,’ one of the most beloved songs in the Disney canon — and one of the songs most parents will know the lyrics to backwards — which peaked at Number 5 in 2015.

However, Aladdin’s ‘A Whole New World’ still holds the record for the highest charting Disney song in history.

If this is your first time hearing ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno,’ enjoy having it stuck in your head for the rest of the day.
