MANILA, Philippines—National University put the finishing touches to sweep the elimination round of the UAAP Season 85 men’s volleyball tournament thanks in large part to Joshua Retamar’s efforts.

Behind Retamar, the Bulldogs notched an outright Finals berth after turning back Ateneo, 25-11, 28-26, 16-25, 25-23, on Saturday.

Retamar dished out 22 excellent sets with four points to boot for NU, which hiked its winning streak to 32 games dating back to Season 81.

Retamar’s outing earned him the Collegiate Press Corps’ Player of the Week plum presented by San Miguel Corporation and the Philippine Sports Commission.

Any individual honor, however, is just a bonus for Retamar, whose main focus is to help the Bulldogs win another championship.

“I can say that we are back in the Finals and of course, we want to win the championship in men’s volleyball,” said Retamar. “This is what we’re doing. We are showing our talent. This also for the next batch, for them to carry it on.”

Retamar also put the team on his back with 19 excellent sets, six markers and eight digs en route to their win over University of Santo Tomas on Wednesday, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18, 25-21.

Retamar edged fellow NU players Bella Belen and Alyssa Solomon, UST’s Eya Laure, De La Salle University’s Angel Canino and Adamson University’s Kate Santiago for the weekly honor.
