PIP claimants could be eligible for discount on council tax and travel

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) could award people between £24.45 and £156.90 per week to help with the additional costs of daily living and outdoor mobility needs. If someone gets PIP, they may be entitled to extra money on top of their existing benefits, a reduction in their council tax or road tax bills and discounts on their travel.

People will need their PIP award letter before they can apply for this extra help.

This award letter is sometimes called a PIP award notice. It’s sent to people when the DWP has made a decision on their PIP claim.

The DWP guidance states: “Entitlement to PIP provides a gateway or passport to other benefits, such as Carer’s Allowance, and schemes sponsored by other departments, such as the Blue Badge scheme.”

Depending on what level of PIP a person gets, they may be eligible for “cash top-ups” on other benefits a person receives.

Britons may get a top-up (called a premium) on the following benefits if they get PIP:

  • Housing Benefit
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Employment and Support Allowance – but only if you get the PIP daily living component
  • Pension Credit – but only if you get the PIP daily living component

To apply for these premiums, people should contact the office in charge of their benefits, tell them they’re getting PIP and ask them what other help this entitles them to.

Additionally, if someone gets either the daily living or mobility component of PIP, they may get money off their council tax bill.

Each case is different and depends on things like the component and rate of PIP they’re getting. However, their council will be able to tell them how much they can get off.

DON’T MISS

Claimants of the mobility award for PIP can also be eligible for the Blue Badge Scheme, even if they can’t drive.

A Blue Badge holder travelling either as a driver or passenger can park for free in disabled parking bays and may be exempt from other parking restrictions.

PIP claimants can also apply for a disabled person’s railcard. This does come at a cost of £20 for one year or £54 for three years. This offers up to a third off most rail fares across the UK.

PIP claimants can apply for the disabled person railcard if they are blind, partially blind, deaf or unable to speak.

People can also be eligible if they can’t walk very far because of a disability, illness or injury, don’t have arms or can’t use their arms, or has a severe learning disability.

Anyone with a disability can book assistance when they travel, so they can enjoy the journey worry-free.

Individuals may also be able to use the Motability Scheme if they get the enhanced PIP mobility rate.

The Motability Scheme enables people to get mobile by exchanging their mobility allowance to lease a new car, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle, scooter or powered wheelchair.

It is always a good idea to check people are claiming all the benefits they’re entitled to as this could take some financial pressure households are facing as the cost of living crisis continues.

Britons can use the benefits calculator on the Government website.
