PIP claimants can get help with energy bills this winter
The cost of living crisis is particularly hard for people with health conditions or disabilities who often find being cold can make their condition worse. Many are having to choose between heating and putting food on the table, however, there is Government help available to people on PIP which could help them save money on their energy bills this winter.
Almost three million people claim PIP (Personal Independence Payment) which is paid to people with a disability or health condition who haven’t yet reached state pension age and need help with everyday tasks.
Exactly how much someone receives depends on how much their condition affects them, but 35 percent of claimants are granted the highest level of award – which works out at £627 a month.
All kinds of physical health conditions qualify for PIP as well as mental health disorders like anxiety and schizophrenia.
Britons who claim disability benefits should have already received a cost of living payment of £150 but they could also claim additional help worth up to £30,000.

PIP claimants will also receive a £150 disability cost of living payment in 2023, although the Government hasn’t yet confirmed the exact date it will land in people’s bank accounts.
Depending on their financial circumstances they may also be eligible to get Cold Weather Payments of £25 if triggered in their area – paid every seven days the temperature drops, or is predicted to fall, below zero.
People in receipt of Disability Living Allowance (DLA), PIP and Attendance Allowance can no longer claim the Warm Home Discount.
However, they could apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant from the local council worth up to £30,000 which can be spent on a heating system – the Government funds an organisation called Foundations which can help people apply for one of these grants.
Meanwhile, PIP claimants may also qualify for further financial help such as:
- Free prescriptions (depending on illness)
- Free or reduced council tax bills
- Capped water bills
- Reduced price bus or rail fares
- Motability scheme
- Blue badge in England and Wales
- Vehicle tax discount of up to 100 percent.
