Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was left in a state of ‘shock’ following the torrid start to his Chelsea career, according to his new teammate Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The former Arsenal captain arrived at Stamford Bridge on a frantic deadline day having been deemed surplus to requirements by Barcelona, who he joined on six months previously.
Aubameyang had been looking forward to rekindling his relationship with Thomas Tuchel, under whom he enjoyed the most prolific spell of his career during their time together at Borussia Dortmund.
Their reunion, however, effectively lasted just 59 minutes with Tuchel sacked in the aftermatch of last week’s damaging Champions League defeat against Dinamo Zagreb.
The 33-year-old made his home debut in Wednesday’s draw against RB Salzburg, still sporting the protective mask he has been forced to wear after a terrifying robbery at his old family home in Barcelona left him with a broken jaw last month.
‘He was a little in shock, a lot of change, the last two or three days were very crazy for him, everything that happened to him was a misfortune,’ revealed Kepa when asked how Aubameyang had adapted to life at his new club.
Aubameyang was also asked about Tuchel himself, and he said: ‘Everyone knows the relationship that I had with Thomas.
‘It’s always sad when someone leaves the club. Obviously, I just saw him for a few days. When you play football you have to adapt very quickly to some moments in the season, this can happen.”
Aubameyang also revealed he had not yet spoken to Tuchel, but lifted the lid on what he thought the German was feeling: ‘I think he was a bit frustrated and sad, obviously.
‘I will try to talk to him as soon as possible. It’s been a crazy week for all of us, that’s part of life, we have to adapt.
‘I think it’s a bit of sadness at the moment, hopefully we’ll get back to better days soon.
‘Obviously, I think it’s a bit strange for everybody, not only for me, but as I said, this is football, you have to adapt.
‘When you play for Chelsea you need results as soon as possible, that’s why I’m a bit frustrated today.’
