Pickpockets a cause for concern, say Greater Manchester Police

Police have warned people to be vigilant in Manchester following an outbreak of pickpocketing in the city centre.

Officers from the Greater Manchester force have disclosed that there have been numerous thefts from people in the area of late. And they have urged the public to keep their mobile phones hidden from view “in a pocket or inside a closed bag” to stave off the risk of would-be muggers.

“We have officers out in uniform and plain clothes overnight, targeting criminals committing robberies and thefts,” they explained. “We are working alongside CCTV, security and businesses to prevent and detect thefts in the city, utilising stop and search powers and arresting those offending.”

According to recent posts on social media, a favourite spot for pickpockets is the pedestrianised Market Street. Some thieves operate in pairs, while others work alone. One man said he chased a pickpocket and cornered him. The pickpocket returned the man’s stolen wallet without a struggle – but when the victim got home he realised he had been given an empty fake lookalike.

People are reminded to dial 999 in an emergency, otherwise police can be contacted on the 101 non-emergency number if you see anything suspicious.
