The showrunner for Picard has teased what fans can expect from season 3, promising a ‘satisfying conclusion’ for those who have stuck with the lead character’s story since Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Today, the release date for the show lead by Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart) lands on Amazon Prime Video, as he embarks on an all-new, death-defying adventure alongside old friends and new faces.
Several seasoned Star Trek actors are reprising their roles in the cast, including LeVar Burton as Geordi La Forge, Michael Dorn as Worf, Jonathan Frakes as William Riker and Brent Spiner as Lore, much to the excitement of aficionados of the franchise.
During a recent interview with Metro.co.uk, executive producer Terry Matalas, who’s served as showrunner since season two, revealed that the third outing for Picard is ‘certainly a bit of a departure from what’s come before’.
He then explained just how closely connected it is to Star Trek: The Next Generation, which originally aired on TV from 1987 to 1994.
‘In a lot of ways it’s a final sort of Star Trek The Next Generation film, a 10-part movie. And it’s sort of a passing of the baton from the last generation to the next in so many ways,’ he shared.
‘So it’s probably the most emotional story, the most gratifying to see these characters where they are decades later, to see their families, to see how they’ve changed, to see how they’ve stayed the same. And put it against this canvas of this giant science fiction adventure that has an absolutely epic conclusion. It’s pretty thrilling.’
Terry added that people who have been fans of these particular characters ever since they made their introductions in Next Generation have plenty of treats in store.
‘I think I can guarantee that it’s a satisfying conclusion to Star Trek: The Next Generation fans and that we didn’t leave anything on the floor,’ he promised.
Patrick has played Picard for almost four decades, having first appeared as the character in Next Generation before returning to the role in films including Star Trek Generations, Star Trek: Insurrection and Star Trek: Nemesis, and the TV show Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
In the third season of his eponymous show, Picard joins forces with his old pal Captain Riker (Jonathan) when he receives a distress call from Beverly Crushed (Gates), who he had a romantic connection with many years ago.
They discover that there’s far more at play in the galaxy with evil forces threatening their way of life, as an old enemy also resurfaces.
Picard is available to watch on Paramount Plus through Amazon Prime Video, with new episodes released on Fridays.
