‘Phenomenal’ Queenslander puts heat on Hooper
Reds flanker Fraser McReight has surged to the joint-lead in Stan Sport’s Australian Super Rugby Pacific player of the year race alongside Carter Gordon after dominating the Force in round 10.
After each round the Between Two Posts team are handing out their 3-2-1 votes towards their ’Posty’ awards.
The stakes are high in 2023 as Wallabies coach Eddie Jones runs the rule over the Test contenders with the ultimate carrot of a place in the Rugby World Cup squad.

MORGAN TURINUI, Former Wallabies and Waratahs back
3 points: Fraser McReight
“An outstanding performance of quality, workrate, discerning decision making at breakdown, punching through.
“That combination with (Harry) Wilson and (Tate) McDermott – an easy three points.”
2: Andrew Kellaway
“It’s the reliability, is the big one. If you don’t make mistakes, it’s such a positive thing. It sounds stupid.”
1: James Slipper
“He got points from us for some of the flashier stuff, when he scored a couple of tries. Core role quality, leadership, I reckon he’s having a season.”

STEPHEN HOILES, Former Wallabies, Waratahs and Brumbies forward
3: Fraser McReight
2: Corey Toole
“No substitute for speed.”
1: Andrew Kellaway
“He’s back, a couple of weeks into it, going well. Always beats a couple in contact and probably putting a bit of pressure on for that No.15 jersey. Is he a winger, is he a Wallaby fullback, but playing well down there at the Rebels. Extremely reliable, versatile.
“Because he’s not a big guy, a lot of the time you think he’s about to get whacked but he has the ability to spin out of tackles in contact. He reminds me, funnily enough, of Clinton Schifcofske – always spun out of contact and spent a bit of time at the Reds.
“He’s got that ability to turn what looks like it’s going to be a bad situation into a safe situation.”

SEAN MALONEY, Nine and Stan Sport rugby commentator
3: Fraser McReight
“He was phenomenal the other night. He was non-stop, his engine was massive, his timing at the breakdown, his link work, his smarts, his ability to finish tries from in close.
“His body height, everything A1 – he was superb. He could have had five tries as well.”
2: Andrew Kellaway
“We used to call him ‘The Fire’ in his early days in NRC, because his hair was redder than it is now. Look at ‘The Fire go.’ He loved it.”
1: Tate McDermott
“Just everywhere the other night, playing some good footy at the moment.”
