Pharmacist shares ‘warning’ signs of fibromyalgia – plus how to treat it

Fibromyalgia, also known as fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), refers to a long-term condition that triggers pain all over the body.

While fibromyalgia typically targets people between the ages of 25 and 55, anyone can get it.

According to the NHS, the exact cause of the condition is unknown, but it’s thought to be linked to abnormal levels of certain chemicals in the brain and changes in the way the central nervous system processes pain messages.

The key symptom is widespread pain, but Noel Wicks, pharmacist and advisor to Amgesic Pain Relief Gel, also shared other “warning” signs to look out for.

Wicks said: “People may also experience stiffness and tenderness of the muscles, tendons, and joints.

“Extreme fatigue, poor quality sleep, trouble with memory and concentration (so-called fibro fog) are also common.

“Someone with fibromyalgia may sometimes experience clumsiness, dizzy spells, feeling too hot or cold, painful periods, restless legs syndrome, and numbness or tingling in the hands and feet.”

The symptoms caused by fibromyalgia differ from person to person and can come and go.

According to the health service, a tell-tale sign of these symptoms is that they can suddenly get better or worse.

The NHS adds that you should “see a GP” if you think you have fibromyalgia.

While the signs are unlikely to disappear completely, treatment can help to ease them.

Wicks said: “Rather than build up reliance on strong oral painkillers, it’s safer to go for a topical product that can be applied directly to the site of the pain.

“Diclofenac sodium is a well-researched medicine with an excellent track record of safety and effectiveness.

“Exercise is very helpful for fibromyalgia and your GP may prescribe an exercise programme, either to do on your own or as a part of a group, depending on your personal preference.”
