MANILA, Philippines-National Master Darry Bernardo topped Board 4 and FIDE Master Sander Severino placed second in Board 1 during the inaugural FIDE Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities in Belgrade, Serbia on Sunday.

Bernardo’s golden effort and the silver medal of Severino propelled Team Philippines to third overall after outscoring three other countries—India, host Serbia and Uzbekistan—that also collected eight match points.

Poland was the runaway champion by scoring six wins in as many matches and the international team of Physically Disabled Chess Players (IPCA) claimed the team silver medal with 10 match points.

Other members of the bronze-performing Philippine squad are National Masters James Infiesto, Henry Roger Lopez and Cheyzer Mendoza.
