The RAC says filling a tank is at a record £103 for petrol and almost £106 for diesel.

Its fuel spokesman, Simon Williams, said: “New records in the average price of petrol have been set every day for the last month, with a litre rising 21p, which has added more than £11 to a tank.”

Diesel is heading to a previously unthinkable average of £2 a litre, he added.

The invasion of Ukraine and moves to reduce dependence on Russian oil have driven prices.

But Luke Bosdet, of the AA, said the 1p rise on Tuesday was a surprise “given that wholesale costs have been level if not lower since the Jubilee”.

The Treasury cut fuel tax in March by 5p after pressure from The Sun’s Keep It Down campaign.

But retailers are accused of not passing it on. Mr Williams said it is causing “increasing anger from drivers” and added: “There’s absolute frustration at the government’s apparent unwillingness to take action.”
