Peter Kay sparked fears from his family over career decision before turning 50
Peter Kay has admitted that despite the fan excitement around his stand-up comedy comeback, his mum Margaret had her concerns.
The comedian, who turns 50 today, began his arena tour at Manchester’s AO Arena last December and will perform until August 2025.
The TV star will travel all over the UK and Ireland as he goes solo, having previously returned to the stage for his Dance for Life charity shows.
However, his mum raised her concerns for the comedian at the time, given that the tour lasts almost two years.
Back in November last year when the tour was announced, Peter joined Zoe Ball on her BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show to reveal what his mother had to say.

Peter revealed: “My mum rang on Sunday night after that advert went on and said, ‘how many nights you doing?’.”
After sharing that he would perform more shows than the previously imagined 11 dates, he tried to reassure Margaret.
His mother commented: “Peter, that’s a lot of nights”, to which the former Coronation Street actor replied: “It’s a tour”.
When asked how he would get home from Manchester after the gigs, the Lancashire-born celeb pointed out to his mum that he could take himself home.
She asked her son: “You’re driving yourself? Oh Peter!”
Peter told Zoe how he felt after his mother shared her worries, quipping: “I thought, I’m 49 not nine… I can drive home.”
This will be Peter’s first live tour since 2010, when he performed to more than 1.2 million people and broke the Guinness World Record for the biggest-selling run ever.
Time Out reported that O2 and Virgin said the sale was “by far the highest demand we’ve ever seen for priority tickets in 15 years”, after it led to the O2 priority ticket website crashing.
Peter later told the BBC Radio 2 DJ that he couldn’t comprehend the reaction to his stage comeback adding: “I thought we should call this tour Peter Who? because I haven’t been (around) for five years. Being on the news … can you get your head around that?”
Peter’s appearance on stage may also be striking to long-time fans of the comic, as he was spotted sporting a much slimmer figure when his tour kicked off this year.
He was spotted in a photograph with musician Bryan Edery on his Instagram, which showed Peter sporting a slender frame.
The two were all smiles as the pianist dedicated a touching social media post to the star at his London O2 show: “I was fortunate enough to be invited by my good friends to see Peter Kay’s amazing show at the O2. And then very lucky to meet the man himself backstage.”
He added: “Go and see Peter’s show, it’s incredible. Secondly, thank you friends, you know who you are.”
