Personal Statement 101 by Simona Valeva, Graveney School

As hard as it may be to believe, Year 12 is slowly coming to an end and exams are just around the corner. Starting to think about your personal statement is essential at this point, especially if you are aiming for a selective university. In this article I will give you a guide on what you can do to make your personal statement and application to university stand out.

1. Looking for work experience: If you are taking part in the Young Reporter scheme, then you are likely already familiar with work experience and how vital it is when writing a good personal statement. Work experience shows your interest in a certain subject outside of the classroom and therefore proves to universities that you are ambitious. Whether it is online or in person, work experience is vital for a good personal statement. If you want to pursue certain subjects such as medicine, work experience is crucial as it shows the university that you can apply your knowledge to real life situations.

2. Wider reading: This is when students go beyond what is covered in class and research their subject more thoroughly. Expanding your knowledge outside of the classroom can also be as easy as reading a book or watching a documentary about your subject. While wider reading may be easier for essay subjects, compared to STEM subjects, as they are more academic, it is necessary for a good personal statement.

3. Extracurricular activities: While they are not as important as supercurricular activities, such as work experience or wider reading which relate to the subject you are pursuing, some universities prioritise students who play an instrument, sport or participate in clubs/societies. Pursuing extracurriculars shows universities that you are a well-rounded person who is not purely defined by academics. However, extracurriculars are very fun and could be a great distraction from stressful school work.

4. Summer school: Although it may not be the most entertaining way to spend your summer holiday, summer school helps immensely when applying to universities. Programmes like Sutton Trust provide an opportunity to experience university life, all completely for free! Furthermore, some universities may give you a contextual offer as a result of attending summer school, which could help you immensely when applying for your desired university!

While it may be hard to keep up with school work, while also participating in super and extracurriculars, ultimately, it will pay off and make your application attract the attention of universities.

Good luck to everyone in their upcoming exams!
