A quick trick can easily boost your connection’s speed.

Phone carrier and Wi-Fi provider company Verizon shared the tip in a blog post.

“Your Wi-Fi coverage (the signal strength of your wireless router) can be affected by several factors, including its location,” the company said.

“Before installing your wireless home network, you should consider placing your router at a location to ensure you aren’t limiting the range,” it added.

WHY WI-FI PLACEMENT IS IMPORTANT

Distance and physical barriers or interferences can impact your Wi-Fi’s signal.

For those reasons, it’s imperative that your Wi-Fi is placed somewhere where its connection cannot be hindered.

What’s more, hiding your router under something will prevent the hot air from exiting its vents.

If your router is unable to properly do this, it can overheat and even become a fire hazard.

Below we have outlined some helpful tips from Verizon to help you prevent this from happening and to get the strongest connection.

WHERE SHOULD YOU MOVE YOUR ROUTER

Verizon recommends placing your router at least 10 feet from other Wi-Fi networks.

This also goes for transmitting devices like cordless phones, microwaves, and baby monitors.

It’s important to keep your router away from any large metal objects, heat sources, moisture, excessive dust, or extreme cold.

You will also want to keep the router “as close to the center of your home network area as possible,” Verizon noted.

“Position the devices connected to your network so the signals will go straight through a wall rather than at an angle,” the company added.

That’s because if the signals hit a wall at an angle, it appears much larger and decreases its strength.

Keep the number of walls and ceilings between your router and the other devices on your network to a minimum.

Lastly, place the router near a window if you want to use Wi-Fi outside.
