Apps can use up battery in the background

For the most part, iPhone is well optimised to manage the battery so it lasts as long as possible.

Overtime, the battery can start to fade – which is normal and happens to any smartphone.

So whether you simply want the battery to last as long as it possibly can at its fittest, or you’re battery is old so you need all you can get, you might want to try limiting background app refresh.

Background app refresh is designed to keep apps running when you’re not using them.

It’s so that when you next open it, everything is up-to-date.

For example, your Facebook news feed and even Messenger need it to alert you.

Switching it off means your iPhone won’t keep checking for new stuff.

Instead, it’ll just update once you’ve opened it.

Another side effect of background app refresh is it uses data – so those with limited data might want to switch it off too.

It’s very easy to deactive.

How to switch off background app refresh on iPhone

All you have to do is open Settings and select General.

From there, find Background app refresh.

Then tap Off.

There are other ways to save battery, of course.

Switching brightness down helps massively too and now lots of apps offer dark mode.

How to switch to dark mode

Open the Settings and find Display & Brightness.

Under appearance, switch on Dark.

While you’re here, it’s also a good idea to set the auto-lock to 30 seconds.

This means your screen will switch off a lot earlier when you’re not using it.

Just tap Auto-Lock further down and choose 30 seconds.
