Pensioners could get council tax paid in full but over a million people may be missing out
There are plenty of benefits available to older people in the UK, and subsidised council tax could be one of the more helpful schemes. Pension Credit may provide the pathway for pensioners to reduce their bill.
Pension Credit is a benefit which is available to people who have reached state pension age and have a lower income.
The current UK state pension age is 66 for men and women.
Britons can get their weekly income topped up to £177.10 if they earn less than this and are single.
Couples on the other hand may get a combined top up, taking their joint income to £270.30.

It was previously known as Council Tax Benefit until April 2013.
Homeowners and renters can both claim Council Tax Support, as can both employed and unemployed people.
Guarantee Credit recipients may be able to get their council tax paid in full.
However, people who do not qualify for Guarantee Credit may still be eligible for support if they have a low income and savings of less than £16,000.
The exact amount of support someone can get may vary, as local councils are responsible for operating their own Council Tax Support scheme, and setting the rates.
How much help an individual can get may depend on any of the following:
- Which benefits they receive
- Their age
- Their income
- Their savings
- Who they live with
- How much council tax they pay.
