Peaky Blinders: What drug is Tommy Shelby doing?
Season six, which marks the last ever for the programme, has shocked viewers with so many memorable moments – from the return of Alife Solomons, (Tom Hardy) to the show’s touching tribute to the late Helen McCrory.
The Birmingham-born hardman (Cillian Murphy) and other characters have been shown smoking and drinking a lot throughout the series in order to stop themselves from reliving the painful war experience in their mind.
And the BBC One drama hasn’t shied away from showcasing Tommy’s mental state following his time on the frontline.
But what drugs has he been taking?
What drug is Tommy Shelby doing?
While cocaine use is common among the characters, Tommy smokes brown opium at night in series one and two to minimize the stress and symptoms of his PTSD.
Although his father Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson) doesn’t have any haunting dreams from the war, he finds himself triggered when he’s provoked during a fight.
The main protagonist uses opium – an addictive drug used as a narcotic – as a coping mechanism, however, this has resulted in some frequent visions of his late wife Grace.
Show creator Steven Knight expressed that Tommy’s unexpected symptoms in season five saw him face his biggest enemy… which was Tommy himself.
‘What I’m trying to do is…the post-traumatic stress will never go away, and it never does, because that’s the reality of it,’ he told Digital Spy.
‘I think it probably all stems back to that [PTSD from the war],’ Cillian added.
‘I think we’ve seen in terms of the relationships now, he’s become a father a couple of times and you can see how he’s trying to wrestle with that and the fact that these men really just medicated themselves. You know, didn’t have any sort of actual, proper help.’
In seasons three and four of the gangster saga, Tommy’s mind is dominated by thoughts of suicide, depression, and self-secluded turmoil -but no amount of gin, rum, and whiskey has helped take away the pain.
Peaky Blinders returns tonight at 9pm on BBC One.
