Paul Whitehouse shares ‘one regret’ as he recalls relationship with late father
Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing star Paul Whitehouse has opened up about his “one regret” before the passing of his late father.
The 65-year-old comedian spoke about the “simple” relationship he had with his father in a conversation with friend John Bailley, who has organise the lifelong fisherman to appear at The Game Fair at Ragley Hall in Warwickshire, which is being held 28-30 July.
Paul, who will be overseeing The Investec Enclosure restaurant, spoke candidly about the “simple” understanding he and his father shared.
John suggested to Paul that his relationship with his father on the riverbank was very special, as fishing was something they had in common.
“I never had any bond with my father and taught myself to fish,” the BBC star admitted.
He then added: “My dad was a very calm figure in my life and I have only good memories of him.
“We had a very simple relationship – we didn’t need to talk much in each other’s company – but we were always at ease.
“And angling was the thing we hung our love on,” he continued.
“My only regret was that he didn’t live to see Gone Fishing, because he would have been so
proud and happy.”
Paul and his pal Bob Mortimer have appeared in the BBC’s Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing since 2018 and fans will be delighted to know that they can expect more series to come.
The show sees the pair reflect on life after their shared major heart problems, while travelling off to beautiful locations in the British countryside on a long fishing trip.
The format of each episode centres around catching a key species of fish, with Paul using his expert knowledge of fishing to help Bob along the way.
Meanwhile, Bob organises their accommodation and meals along their route.
The Game Fair is being held 28-30 July at Ragley Hall in Warwickshire.
Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing is available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.
