Paul O’Grady ‘punched straight in the gob’ by Great Dane puppy while out in local park

Paul O’Grady, 66, who helms ITV show For The Love of Dogs, had his passion for pups tested after he was whacked in the mouth by a puppy when he was taking a walk in his local park. It comes after the presenter recently admitted to using a £5 bill to scoop up dog poo before spending the (cleaned) note in a shop.

Paul said: “There was a Great Dane puppy, nearly seven-foot standing on his hind paws, and he came straight into the park, took one look at me, and punched me straight in the mouth.

“Not patting me with his paw. Full-blown bang, like David Haye, straight in the gob.’

The star – who rose to prominence as Lily Savage in the 1980s – admitted he received zero sympathy from onlookers.

He went on: “If it was anybody else on telly, they’d all be saying, ‘Are you alright? Would you like anything?’ Not me,” he added to The Sun.

The former teatime chat show host has always been a lover of dogs and famously featured his canine companions on his show – most notably his four-legged friend Buster, who made regular appearances on The Paul O’Grady show until the canine’s tragic death in 2009.

However, the host of Paul O’Grady’s Saturday Night Line Up recently made another dog-related confession that startled his fans.

He explained he was out walking his beloved dog Buster at the time when his pet needed to do “his business” and Paul was caught short without a poo bag to clean up.

Speaking to Claudia Winkleman on BBC Radio 2, the TV personality said: “When Buster was a puppy, I was out with him on the green. He did his business and I’m very conscientious.

On Instagram, Paul shared a selfie outside gorgeous multi-coloured buildings while wearing large black sunglasses. He typed: “An accident waiting to happen.

“The shades are an old prescription and the world looks a little fuzzy, my ear popped on the plane and it hasn’t come back yet so I’m a bit Mutt and Jeff in one ear and the mask just adds to the total sensory deprivation experience.

“These steps on the old bridges have been worn away over the years and consequently are like glass so there’s a possibility I might go flying into the canal.

“If I do then I’m taking a couple of kids and an American tourist with me,” he joked.

The star explained he was staying on a small island near Venice, and was still wearing his mask to ensure he stays protected from coronavirus while exploring the narrow streets.

He continued: “I’m in Burano, an island not far from Venice. The houses are all painted different colours and it looks lovely.

“Got me mask on as some of the narrow streets are a bit crowded and besides, everyone else has got theirs on. (sic)

“Hope you’re enjoying the lovely weather back home.#burano #venice #venicefilmfestival #holiday,” he added.

In response, his fans told him to “stay safe” and try to enjoy his trip.
