Paul Mescal blazer-ed a trail at the Film Independent Spirit Awards ceremony.

The Normal People actor turned heads in an oversized turquoise jacket, low-cut vest and baggy black trousers.

But the luck of the Irish wasn’t with the 27-year-old, who left Saturday’s star-studded bash in Santa Monica, California, empty-handed. For the first time ever, organisers introduced gender-neutral categories and Mescal was up for best lead performance – for divorce drama Aftersun.

He lost out to Michelle Yeoh, of Everything Everywhere All At Once. ‘I promise, no swearing tonight,’ Yeoh, 61, began, making light of her expletive-sprinkled speech at last month’s Screen Actors Guild Awards. Praising filmmaking duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, she said: ‘The Daniels, my boys, thank you for writing such an incredible script that gave us the opportunity to be here. I want to dedicate this to all our mothers.

‘Without our mothers, none of us would be here.’

Triumphing in seven of the eight categories it was up for, the film also won best feature, best director, best screenplay, best breakthrough for Stephanie Hsu, and best supporting performance for Ke Huy Quan.
