Paul McCartney’s pre-show ritual includes unexpected comedy TV

Paul McCartney has been performing on stages around the world for almost 70 years, and his habits have continually changed over the course of his career.

While he no doubt indulged in certain delights while he was in The Beatles with his best pals George Harrison, John Lennon and Ringo Starr, things have changed a lot for the 81-year-old.

He previously revealed he “boils a kettle” before each show so he can do “a steam thing for the voice”. But he also winds down with some light-hearted comedy.

According to Cheat Sheet, McCartney likes watching comedic TV shows before he hits the stage. In particular, he loves settling into some Family Feud.

McCartney said: “I like to watch Steve Harvey in Family Feud! I don’t like to watch anything too serious before a show. I like to keep it light and something you can dip in and out of.”

McCartney explained that, if he gets the rare opportunity to run back into the dressing room and change clothes, it “doesn’t matter” if he missed portions of the game show.

“I can come back in,” he explained. “And ‘100 people said,’ and I’ll give the top answer, hopefully. That’s a good fun show, and I just like the fact that you can give your answer.”

He also confessed he loves a few British panel shows, as well.

McCartney continued: “I love comedy. I watch it on TV, you know Live From The Apollo, you see wonderful people on that. Then I like shows like Mock The Week and Have I Got News For You, I like those shows. And I like Would I Lie To You?

“I think there’s some very funny people on that, Lee Mack is a very talented boy. You sit at home with your friends or family, and you say, ‘He’s lying, he’s lying”!’ That’s the kind of thing I like.”

Most importantly, however, McCartney tends to his priceless vocal cords before each performance.

After boiling a kettle, McCartney explained: “I get a salt – like a brine solution which I then gargle with. I have no idea if it does anything.”

He has also confessed that he doesn’t drink alcohol before performing.

But once he gets off stage he has one waiting for him: A margarita.
