Paul McCartney ‘dedicates exhibition to Jane Asher’ after she dumped him on TV

Sir Paul McCartney has dedicated a part of his National Portrait Gallery exhibition to ex-fiancée Jane Asher.

The rocker was famously dumped by the actress on live TV in 1968 as he watched, stunned, from home.

Despite the very public humiliation, decades later, the former Beatle, 81, has paid tribute to Jane, now 77, and her family at his new show Paul McCartney Photographs 1963-64: Eyes of the Storm, according to The Mirror.

The small section, titled ‘At Home with the Ashers’, shows black and white snaps of the actress, who is praised in a description panel as an “inspiration”, and the results of the images “are more intimate and considered than other photographs he took at the time.”

The displays also reveal that the pair met when the musician was 21 and Jane was 17 at a concert aired on the BBC.

They then had a five year relationship, which saw the Hey Jude singer live with Jane for three years – who was a famous young actress and panellist on BBC’s popular Juke Box Jury – and her family.

He learned much of his musicianship from her music professor mother Margaret, and wrote iconic hits I Want to Hold Your Hand and I Love Her while at home.

“The Asher family put me up in a garret flat on the top floor, and I think this self-portrait in the mirror was taken in that room,” he writes on the display.

“Not only did the Ashers give me a home away from home, but it was full of interesting people and conversations, and was also a very good place to write.”

The pop superstar was said to have been in love and so was stunned when seemingly out of nowhere Jane ended the romance during her appearance on chat show Dee Time, saying: “I haven’t broken it off, but it’s finished.”

Sir Paul moved on and later famously married Linda McCartney (nee Eastman) from 1969 until her death in 1998. The pair shared four children.

He then wed Heather Mills in 2002 and welcomed a daughter before their 2008 divorce.

Sir Paul married his current wife, businesswoman Nancy Shevell, in 2011.

The pair looked in good spirits as they attended the private viewing of the exhibition on Monday.

Jane, meanwhile, shares three children with her cartoonist husband of 42 years, Gerald Scarfe.
