Patrick Mahomes injury update: Chiefs QB doesn’t finish blowout loss to Titans after hit to head

The Chiefs sustained a major loss during Sunday’s game against the Titans.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Patrick Mahomes was hit in the head as he was sacked on a fourth down. He had to be helped up off the field and went straight to the medical tent after the injury. He did not return to the game.

Chad Henne replaced Mahomes and finished the game at quarterback. The Chiefs lost 27-3 to the Titans, and fell to 3-4 on the year.

After the game, coach Andy Reid said Mahomes cleared concussion protocol and said it was his decision to remove the quarterback from the game.

With 8:13 left in the game, Mahomes and the Chiefs faced a 4th and 18, and as he waited for a receiver to get open, Mahomes was sacked by Denico Autry. As he was going down, Mahomes took a hit in the head from defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons that left him shaken.

Mahomes was able to walk into the medical tent under his own power and was seen talking with Reid after leaving the tent.

Mahomes was getting beaten up all day by the Titans as he was sacked four times for a loss of 31 yards.

Prior to his injury, Mahomes was having the worst start of his career. It was the first time since Sept. 29, 2019 that Mahomes had gone a game without throwing a touchdown, and his first start since Oct. 7, 2018, with no touchdown passes and two turnovers.

Mahomes finished the game with a passer rating of 62.3, the lowest of his career. His previous low came on Oct. 7, 2018, in a start against the Jaguars, where he finished with a 62.7 rating.

According to Stathead, the Chiefs’ three points on Sunday were the fewest since Mahomes became the starting quarterback in Kansas City. Previously, only during the Super Bowl loss to the Buccaneers has Kansas City gone without scoring a touchdown in a game.
