Passengers fume as woman offered luxury flight after stealing seat

Passengers were left outraged after hearing that a woman was unduly rewarded with an upgrade to business class after refusing to move from another man’s pre-booked seat.

The incident, shared on Reddit by an anonymous passenger sitting in the next row down, took place as flyers boarded a 14-hour flight from Melbourne, Australia, to Abu Dhabi.

A “middle-aged” woman reportedly boarded the plane and sat in an aisle seat, before being approached by a “very tall man” who told her that she was sitting in his allocated seat.

Instead of mobing, the woman told the man to sit in her middle-row seat, leading to a stand-off between the pair.

Recalling the audacious incident, the Redditor said: “Eventually, due to the man blocking the aisle for some minutes, the cabin crew came to see what was happening and told the lady to move to her allocated seat.

“She point-black refused and then just ignored them in silence. They asked the man if he would be willing to swap with her and take the middle seat, but he (understandably) wanted the aisle.”

A flight attendant subsequently made a few calls – presumably to her supervisor – before unfairly rewarding the woman with a seat in business class, according to the witness.

“At this point, she could not have moved quicker,” the Redditor said. “Personally, I was disgusted. If anything, the displaced man should have been offered the upgrade. It was a sickener to see her bad behavior rewarded.”

Other fuming Reddit users flocked to the comment section of the post, with one writing: “Now I’m enraged, thanks!”

Another said: “And the seat stealer will learn that if she just doesn’t do what she’s supposed to, she’ll be rewarded. Reinforcing entitled behaviors just gets more entitled behavior.”

Many agreed that the upgrade should have gone to the man, or that alternatively, the woman should have been removed from the plane.

One user pointed out: “Sounds to me like the offer was a ruse to get her out of the seat and make it easier to get her off the plane.”

Another who had witnessed a similar incident on a past flight commented: “Wow! If I were there I would be sending a letter to corporate about that!!

“I was on a Delta flight once when something similar happened and the seat stealer refused to move so they were told they were going to be rebooked onto a different flight, the lady still refused and they have to get the cops to come and drag her off the plane – but they did it! That’s how you deal with seat stealers who won’t move.”
