Partner Content | Fernandez vs. Garcia Wimbledon picks and odds: Fade Canadian in difficult matchup

Leylah Fernandez won her first-round match at Wimbledon and now faces a tougher test in Caroline Garcia.

The pregame narrative: The chasm in skill between Fernandez’s first opponent and her next is quite large, and therefore we’re fading her. There are a number of markets to choose from when looking to back Garcia, and we’re keying in on two of them.

Check out our Fernandez vs. Garcia Wimbledon picks and the odds for the July 5 match.

Fernandez vs. Garcia Wimbledon picks

Best Bet : Garcia -1.5 sets (+102)

It was encouraging to see Fernandez win her opening match at Wimbledon, but we’re pretty confident that this is where her run will end at the All England Club.

In her first-round win over Kateryna Baindl, Fernandez was both aggressive and careless. She totalled seven aces but had an alarming 10 double faults with her serve. Fernandez rattled off 36 winners but had an eye-popping 44 unforced errors.

While that may have worked against world No. 85 Baindl, it won’t fly against world No. 5 Garcia.

The Frenchwoman quickly disposed of Katie Volynets in the first round, winning 6-4, 6-3 over the American. Garcia dominated on serve in her match, winning eight of 10 service games.

This year, Garcia has won five of her seven matches on the grass courts in straight sets.

Expect this match to end pretty quickly.

Key stat: Garcia is winning 83.6% of her service games in 2023, the most of any WTA competitor with 10 or more matches, per WTAtennis.com.

Quick pick

Under 22.5 games (-130) : In addition to picking Garcia to win in straight sets, we’re not expecting an overly challenging match.

Fernandez lacks the experience and success Garcia has on this surface. Fernandez is 3-3 in six career matches on the grass courts. Garcia, meanwhile, is 50-28 in her 78 career matches on the green.

Looking closer at Fernandez’s wins on this surface, there’s even more reason to be skeptical. Two of her three victories on grass are against competitors outside of the WTA’s top 200 rankings.
