Partner Content | Blue Jays vs. Royals prop bets: Slumping George Springer is worth fading
The Toronto Blue Jays are seeking their first series win of 2023 in today’s matinee against the Kansas City Royals
The pregame narrative: A rough start from George Springer, paired with a suboptimal pitching matchup, has us fading him in multiple ways today. We’re also fading Royals youngster Nick Pratto, who hasn’t collected many hits yet as a big leaguer.
Here are our best Blue Jays vs. Royals prop bets for the April 6 game.
MLB odds as of 9:00 a.m. ET on 04/06/23.
Blue Jays vs. Royals prop bets
Best Bet : Springer under 1.5 bases (-112)
Take away the eye-popping numbers from Opening Day, and Springer is off to a disastrous start to the year. Who knows, maybe he’s just not a fan of the Midwest.
Whatever the reason, Springer has a .241/.290/.241 slash line so far — thanks only to a 5-for-6 showing in the season opener. He’s batted 2-for-23 (.087) since.
Obviously, we can’t actually take away Springer’s Opening Day production. But we can dig deeper on it. Four of his five hits (all singles) came with exit velocities under 85 mph.
He only has five hard-hit balls so far (23% hard-hit rate), per Baseball Savant, and four of those were either skied into the air or pounded into the dirt. Contact quality is lacking right now.
Oh, and today Springer faces Royals starter Jordan Lyles, who has held the leadoff man to a 2-for-17 line with four strikeouts. This is as good of a time as any to fade Springer.
Key stat: Through six games, Springer has fallen under this total five times. He also doesn’t have any extra-base hits yet.
Quick picks
Chapman over 0.5 hits & Springer under 1.5 hits (+116) : Oh look, a plus-money way to fade Springer and back Toronto’s hottest hitter at the same time.
Springer has been held to one or fewer hits in five straight games. So if you’re worried about his first extra-base hit coming, this is an alternate way to back the ice-cold outfielder.
As for Matt Chapman, what can we say? He’s got an MLB-high 12 hits through six games, with at least one hit in five of six outings. And he’s 9-for-21 (.429) lifetime against Lyles.
Pratto under 0.5 hits (-125) : We only have the tiniest of sample sizes to work with for Pratto, who debuted with a .184 batting average last year (49 games) and went hitless yesterday against the Jays.
But we’ll take a flier on fading someone whose career is off to a cold start — as well as someone who’s 0-for-2 with two strikeouts against Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman.
With a splitter that runs away from the left-handed Pratto, we think Gausman will make it a tough day for the 24-year-old.
