Parmiter’s School mock election. Georgia White, Parmiter’s School.
This week the campaigns for the Parmiter’s mock election were sprung into action, preparing for the poll that’ll be open for the students in just two weeks. Parmiter’s school hold their annual mock election in which five parties; Conservatives, Labour, Lib Dem, Reform UK and Greens compile their campaigns and speeches in hopes of winning the election, the campaign must entail three main policies. Last year it was won by the Green Party, their three main policies were that of legalising drugs, lowering the voting age to 16 and cheaper public transport. ‘Go Green or go home’ became the slogan of the winning party. Which party will follow in their footsteps and become the next party to win the mock election.
“Climate change has always been an issue close to me, as the conservative MP I will hone in on these policies and ensure they’re at the forefront of our campaign.” A quote from the conservative MP Eleonor Croston from Parmiter’s school. Last year the conservatives came second in the election, could their fate be in their favour this year? The mock election truly opens so many mind and gets young people thinking about politics. This is vital as we see an overall lack of interest in politics from the youth, proven by turnout rates in 2019. The turnout rates ranged from 47% among 18 to 24-year‑olds up to 74% among over-65s. Events such as the mock election that Parmiter’s school is holding is crucial to ending this trend of disinterest amongst young people. Without this curiosity in the political system, climate etc we become uneducated and disconnected to the world around us.
