Parents to protest proposed merger of Hackney primary schools
Under current proposals set out by Hackney Council, Baden Powell Primary School in Ferron Way would merge onto the site of Nightingale Primary School in Tiger Way in September 2024.
A protest against the merger of the two primary school will now be held outside Hackney Town Hall on Tuesday (May 2) at 11am.
Parents and carers of children at Baden Powell Primary School told the Hackney Gazette that they aim to demonstrate their “strong feelings” about the plans in an effort to “resist this merge”.
Hackney Council announced plans to close or merge six primary schools in the borough earlier this month.
The move was prompted by a fall in pupil numbers that has caused some schools to face what the authority called “serious and irreversible” financial pressures.
The schools that may close are De Beauvoir Primary School in Tottenham Road and Randal Cremer Primary School in Ormsby Street.
Plans also suggested that Colvestone Primary School in Colvestone Crescent move to the site of Princess May Primary School in Princess May Road.
Following the announcement, Mayor of Hackney Philip Glanville said: “School communities will be involved in discussions and plans from the very start and we are committed to listening to what they say.”
