Overwatch 2 fans outraged over $15 price tag for story missions
Things continues to look bad for Overwatch 2 as it’s discovered its coveted story missions aren’t free or available in single player.
There was a lot of disappointment and frustration among Overwatch fans when Blizzard Entertainment admitted it had to scrap its big PvE plans for Overwatch 2 aka one of the key selling points of the sequel.
That didn’t mean there would be no PvE content whatsoever. Rather than a dedicated mode like was originally planned, Overwatch 2 will be getting co-op story missions, with the first batch now arriving in an August 10 update.
Any goodwill Blizzard may have earned from its newest trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase, however, has been lost as fans have discovered that these story missions are paid content.
In order to access the three story missions, you need to buy the Overwatch 2: Invasion bundle, which is priced at $15. That’s roughly £12, but we couldn’t find an official UK price.
There’s also a $40/£32 bundle that includes some extra content like the premium battle pass and two character skins.
A blog post detailing all this states that buying the bundle grants ‘permanent access’ to the story missions. At first, this makes it sound like the story missions are free but only available during a certain period of time. So, you need to pay in order to keep them.
However, that’s apparently not the case. A Blizzard spokesperson told Forbes that the bundle is the only way to access the story missions. The bundle will remain available so latecomers don’t miss out but there’s no way to play these missions without paying for them.
Granted, Overwatch 2 is a free-to-play game so it needs to make its money somehow, but given the growing discontent among the playerbase, it’s hardly surprising that fans aren’t happy to learn their long promised story content is now behind a paywall.
Wow. Disappointed doesn’t even describe how I’m feeling right now. It’s been nothing but trying to take as much money as you can from people since 2 came out. And now you are trying to squeeze more money out of people. I was excited for story content, but not anymore :/

I just realised, 15 bucks for 3 missions only? So you’re gonna ask for my cash every certain amount of time when new missions are available? That esentially makes the 40 bucks pack not worth AT ALL

If the bundle is an option, fine. If you are saying we need to pay to play the story missions, might as well start work on your next game cause fans are done with this. A game has to respect your time and wallet. Itâs why Fortnite is still huge.

On top of that, there’s no option to experience the missions solo either. As confirmed by Game Informer, they’re co-op only so you have to team up with other humans to play them.
If a player drops out, the computer will take over their character but only until another human takes over. There’s no way to play the missions on your own with computer-controlled allies.
Naturally, some are writing Overwatch 2 off as a dead game and that its days are numbered. While it’s too soon to tell if that’s the case, the game most definitely has a public image problem, with its controversies far outweighing any positives it may have.
This is perhaps best evident with the reception to the newest trailer on YouTube. The like/dislike ratio is nearly evenly split – 27,000 likes compared to 28,000 dislikes – with the top comments almost entirely consisting of fans still bitter about the original PvE plans being cancelled.
Overwatch 2 is available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
