Overwatch 2 Beta Ends With A Tease For An Upcoming Fox Support Hero
The Overwatch 2 Beta has come to an end, but it looks like Blizzard’s still got plenty of exciting content coming soon! The beta, which presented an updated version of their popular hero-shooter Overwatch, was open for roughly 20 days. Players explored new configurations, heroes, and maps as a teaser of what was in store for the game’s launch this fall.
While players will have to wait a few more months for the completed game, the Overwatch 2 Beta revealed a mysterious coded message that hints at an upcoming fox-related hero.
Overwatch 2’s Cryptic Codes Point To A New Hero
Though Overwatch usually ends betas with a game-wide farewell, this beta left off with a particularly special good-bye message. Last time, the beta signed off with a sneaky “Boop!” from hacker Sombra; however, the Overwatch 2 Beta sent out an initially confusing message to its player base: “V2hhdCBkb2VzIHRoZSBmb3ggc2F5Pw==.”
Many players were puzzled by this seemingly random keysmash, but others quickly realized that it was a hidden Base64 message. First posted by @HelenPaage, players then decoded the jumble of characters to reveal one cheeky message: “What does the fox say?“
Following this, fans speculated that the fox-related hero is connected to the mysterious blue fox from the latest Overwatch trailer. Fans originally spotted the glowing fox leaping through ghostly shrine gates in a montage of looks at upcoming OW2 content. Now, with this decoded message, players are sure that the fox represents a new ability for a fox-themed character.
To confirm this, Blizzard posted a final beta message on their OW news page: “We’ll continue to balance heroes—based on our findings from the beta, and perhaps based on some additional considerations (like a certain unannounced fox-related hero who will be joining the support roster).“
To add to the speculation, many players believe that the new hero will somehow connect to the Shimadas (Genji and Hanzo). Lore released back in January of 2021 revealed that swordmaster Asa Yamagami may have connections to a fox deity. Asa spoke of paying respects to a fox spirit, hoping that the nine-tailed kitsune would send luck their way. Perhaps this luck has come in the form of new abilities for a support hero.
Players are hoping that this new character will further diversify the support roster by introducing new mechanics and lore. Though Blizzard hasn’t released any other information about this fox support hero, it certainly shows that exciting things are on the horizon!
Overwatch 2 launches on October 4th, 2022, so they’ll likely unveil more heroes in the coming months. We’ll continue to update as we find out more information on the game’s content. For now, keep your eyes out on the DualShockers Twitter or our homepage to get the latest Overwatch news!
