Outlander star teases Ian’s ‘hopeful’ future after tragic heartbreak

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Outlander season 7 and the novels by Diana Gabaldon

Young Ian (played by John Bell) has never had an easy time when it’s come to romance.

He not only offered to marry his cousin Brianna MacKenzie (Sophie Skelton) after it looked like her husband Roger (Richard Rankin) had died before being scolded by his uncle Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) but he was later left heartbroken when his marriage to Wakyo’teyehsnonhsa/Emily (Morgan Holstrom) failed.

The couple’s infant daughter tragically died and Young Ian was sent back to Fraser’s Ridge by the Mohawk tribe while his wife remarried and had children.

Young Ian also had a brief moment with Malva Christie (Jessica Reynolds) but nothing more came of it after she was murdered.

Fans are wondering if Young Ian could finally have some more luck in the love in season seven.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Scottish star Bell, 25, opened up about what the future could hold for his character and whether Young Ian was ready to find love again.

Bell said: “I’m an optimist. I’m always hopeful. He’s been through enough. He needs a break.

“He needs a nice woman, who’s going to treat him right and he’s going to treat her right. I hope so.”

He continued: “Yeah, I think Ian’s ready to love again.

“He was so broken after Wakyo’teyehsnonhsa and everything that happened to him and we saw him go through that whole journey of self-acceptance, of self-love and letting go of the past, forgiving people, forgiving himself.

“Now, the Ian we meet in season seven is pretty fully developed. He knows who he is to his core. He’s been through so much.”

Adding: “He’s become the rock for [the Frasers] a lot. He’s unshakeable. So I think he is ready for this next chapter.”

Those familiar with he Outlander novels and specifically An Echo in the Bone, which serves as the basis for much of season seven, are aware Young Ian has quite a journey ahead of him.

Ian will not only be dealing with the American War of Independence, where his fellow Native Americans will be slaughtered but his own personal survival as he is caught in the crossfires of the conflict.

Moreover, there will be personal conflicts within his family and specifically his secret cousin William Ransom (Charles Vandervaart).

Bell teased Young Ian and William’s relationship would be put to the test after a “certain someone” comes in between the two men.

However, fans will have to wait and see how this dynamic will play out and if William will come to realise the truth of his birth and parentage.

Outlander season 7 airs on Starz and Lionsgate+ on Fridays
