OTT platforms must be sensitive to India’s cultural diversity, says Anurag Thakur
“OTT players have a responsibility of ensuring that their platform does not propagate vulgarity and abuse camouflaged as ‘creative expression’,” he said in a tweet.
In the meeting held in New Delhi, he also asked the platforms to be sensitive and not demean India’s culture in the content it produces under this creative freedom.
“India is a diverse country; OTTs must also reflect the collective conscience of the country and provide a healthy viewing experience for people of all age groups. Platforms must also be sensitive to our cultural diversity as we unleash India’s creative economy,” Thakur said.
The minister also asked OTT players not to use their platforms as a tool of vicious propaganda and ideological biases, PTI reported citing persons who attended the meet.
The union minister said various issues were discussed during the meeting, including content regulation, user experience, enhancing accessibility for the specially abled and overall growth & innovation of the sector. “Ministry of I&B looks forward to furthering partnerships and engagements towards achieving this goal,” he said.
Earlier today, Thakur also announced the Best Web Series Award at International Film Festival of India in Goa to be presented to web series showcasing outstanding original work on an OTT platform in an Indian language.
“The Award aims to incentivise and create investment opportunities in India’s OTT sector, encourage content in Indian languages, recognise exceptional talent and foster growth & innovation of the OTT industry,” the minister tweeted.
The representatives of various OTT platforms were also seen posing with the award brochure unveiled today following discussions with Union Minister Anurag Thakur.
