Opportunities for 12-15 year olds to be vaccinated by Jennifer Graham, Wimbledon High School

As of the 20th December 2021, the NHS opened the national booking service for 12-15 year-olds to get their second COVID-19 jab, as part of the national mission to get people protected against the Omicron variant.

Children are being offered the COVID-19 vaccine because 1 dose gives good protection against a child getting seriously ill and 2 doses gives stronger and longer-lasting protection. Vaccinating children can also help stop the spread of COVID-19 to other people.

Most children aged 12-15 can get the COVID-19 vaccine at school, book their vaccination appointments online for an appointment at a vaccination centre or pharmacy, or find a walk-in vaccination site to get vaccinated without needing an appointment.

There are Walk in Clinics for 12-15 year olds at several locations in South West London. For example, Centre Court Shopping Centre in Wimbledon has clinics for 12-15 year olds for the Pfizer vaccine from 1:30pm to 6pm on Monday 31st January and Sunday 6th February 2022 and 3:30pm to 6pm on Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th February 2022. Another nearby location, The Nelson Health Centre, has held 1st and 2nd dose Pfizer vaccine walk-ins for 12+ from 8:30am to 12pm and 5pm to 7:30pm on Friday 4th February and Sunday 6th February 2022.

13 year old Matthew Graham received his second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine on Sunday 30th January: ‘Although the waiting can be slow and long, you get there in the end and the people were kind, helpful and knew what they were doing’.

Office for National Statistics posted on 28th January 2022 that ‘Around 6 in 10 (61%) adults said children aged 12 to 15 years in their household are already vaccinated’ and this number should escalate as more children continue to receive their first and second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
