Ons Jabeur breaks down in tears and dreading ‘ugly’ photos after Wimbledon loss

Ons Jabeur broke down in tears after losing her second Wimbledon final in two years, this time to Czech star Marketa Vondrousova. She was defeated 6-4, 6-4 as Vondrousova became the first unseeded Grand Slam champion in the Open Era with her historic victory over the Tunisian.

Last year Jabeur was defeated by Elena Rybakina but went on to claim revenge over the Kazakhstani player in the quarter-finals, having also gotten the better of Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals before meeting Vondrousova.

Jabeur is still searching for her first Grand Slam title having also reached the final of the US Open last year, as she had the chance to become the first African woman to lift the Wimbledon title but was unable to deal with the tricky Vondrousova, though she promised to come back to SW19 and win in the future.

“I will try but this is very, very tough but I’m gonna look ugly in the photos so,” Jabeur said. “I think this is the most painful loss of my career so. First I wanna say congratulations to Marketa and her team for this amazing win. You are an amazing player and I know you had a lot of injuries so I’m very happy for you.

“I don’t know, it’s just going to be a tough day for me today but I’m not going to give up and I’m going to come back stronger. It’s an amazing tournament for me I wish I continued until the end I wanna thnk my team for always believing in me and we’re going to make it one day, I promise you.

“Thank you guys for coming thank you for cheering for me, the energy is amazing. I really appreciate your support, it’s been a tough journey but that’s tennis but I promise I’ll come back one day and win this tournament.”

Vondrousova also made sure to pay tribute to the runner-up as she spoke before picking up her title. “I don’t know what’s happening now it’s an amazing feeling and I mean Ons congratulations and you are such an inspiration for all of us and I hope you’re going to win one day,” she said. “You’re an amazing person and congratulations, you guys are doing an amazing job.”

Jabeur continued to receive love from Centre Court as they have backed the Tunisian throughout both of her runs to her Wimbledon finals, something she noted as she fought through the tears.

BBC pundits John McEnroe and Tracy Austin were among those to be surprised that Jabeur as the favourite was unable to claim her maiden Major victory, though Vondrousova’s difficult playing stance proved tricky to play against as the Czech made history at SW19.
