OnePlus finds solution to app throttling, this is how it plans to tackle the issue – Times of India
NEW DELHI: OnePlus was recently accused of manipulating benchmarking scores by optimising the performance of some of the popular apps on OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro smartphones. The company has now found a way to solve the throttling issue by giving the control to the users. It said that it will add ‘optimized mode’ toggle in Oxygen OS 12 to address throttling.
Earlier this month, an online report claimed that the OnePlus 9 Pro’s software was using an application detection mechanism which intentionally kept running popular apps like Google Chrome, Zoom, WhatsApp, Facebook and others in processor’s slower cores. On its part, OnePlus confirmed that it has been throttling the performance of some apps to save battery. In a statement, the company said that it did optimise the apps to save the battery life of these devices.
OnePlus is now adding an option in Oxygen OS settings for uses that will enable them to turn off performance modifications. In a statement given to Android Police, OnePlus said, “Since different chips perform differently and we want to make sure to get the best performance and efficiency out of each one, we’ve implemented performance optimizations to varying degrees on the OnePlus 9R and Nord 2. However, given the clear feedback from users and media, our R&D team is currently working to add an option to let users turn on/off this optimized mode and have better control over the performance of their phones. We’re targeting to have this solution ready with one of the first builds of OxygenOS 12.”
Incidentally, the app throttling is also there in OnePlus 9R and the newly launched OnePlus Nord 2 as well.
The company has not yet revealed how this toggle feature will work. It will roll out the support with Android 12 based OxygenOS 12 update. The update is also expected to bring an integrated ColorOS codebase. OnePlus Nord 2 is the first smartphone from the company to come with ColorOS-based software.
