OnePlus could make things even more confusing with a phone name change

TL;DR

  • Information suggests OnePlus could rebrand the China-only 9RT to the OnePlus RT.
  • This would be for the phone’s alleged upcoming launch in India.
  • It is not at all clear why the company would change the phone’s name, as it appears to be the same phone.

OnePlus used to launch one flagship each year. Then it started launching two: one in the first half and a T-series model in the second. Then it introduced the Pro variants. After that, it announced the Nord line. Then the Nord N line. And then, this year, it launched the OnePlus 9R, an India-only model within the 9-series.

Later, it announced a China-only model called the OnePlus 9RT, even after the company said there would be no T-series models in 2021. Now, according to the Google Play Console (via Mukul Sharma and h/t Android Central), the company might rebrand the 9RT as the OnePlus RT for the Indian market.

In other words, the OnePlus 9RT in China would become the OnePlus RT in India. The phones would be otherwise identical, though. As a refresher, that means a Snapdragon 888 processor, a 120Hz OLED display, a triple-lens rear camera, and a design that makes it look a lot like the OnePlus 9 Pro.

Basically, the OnePlus RT would crib some elements of the OnePlus 9 and mix it with the Nord series. It would be another stepping stone between the mid-range line and the main flagship line — even though the OnePlus 9R, another India exclusive, already did that. But oh well.

Being that this phone is now on the Play Console, it shouldn’t be long before the Indian market sees it.
