One of Marvel’s Most Powerful Villains, The Beyonder, Returns for a New Defenders Story

The Defenders will face off against The Beyonder, one of the most powerful villains in the Marvel Universe, in an upcoming series that begins in June.

The Beyonder, one of the most powerful and threatening villains to exist within the Marvel Universe, will pose as a new threat to the Defenders in an upcoming series.

Marvel Comics announced that an upcoming run of The Defenders, which begins in June, will see the heroes face off against an enemy from “Beyond.” Marvel’s Twitter account dropped two posters to accompany the announcement, both of which show the character floating in space — one with his helmet on over his iconic costume and one without.

First appearing in 1984’s Secret Wars #1 by Jim Shooter and Mike Zeck, the Beyonder is an all-powerful cosmic entity that comes from an other-worldly race of beings known as Beyonders. The Beyonder entered into the Marvel Universe following an accident created by a group of supervillains known as Intelligencia. Becoming intrigued with Earth during the course of Secret Wars, the Beyonder investigated further by transporting a number of Avengers heroes and villains into a makeshift planet he created called Battleworld. The Beyonder returned in a similar role in Secret Wars II when he took a more human-looking form and attempted to destroy the entire Marvel multiverse. Being defeated by the Fantastic Four, X-Men, Avengers and Spider-Man at the end of Secret Wars II, the Beyonder continued to appear in various comics over the following years.

The Beyonder possesses the power to manipulate reality and can create destruction on a universal level. Other powers include limitless strength, teleportation, flight, the ability to copy the physical appearance of other heroes or villains and more.

The original incarnation of the Defenders appeared in 1971’s  Marvel Feature #1. The team was initially created by Doctor Strange, Hulk and Namor. Clea, Silver Surfer, Valkyrie, Hawkeye, Nighthawk, Power Man, Hellstrom and Yellowjacket all joined the team in the following couple of years. A countless number of others have then since joined, left, re-joined and re-left the team. Marvel’s 2021 Defenders run featured a team that included Doctor Strange, Masked Raider, Silver Surfer, Red Harpy and Cloud.

Marvel brought The Defenders into a live-action format with the 2017 Netflix show that only lasted for one season. The team consisted of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

Further details on Marvel’s upcoming Defenders run are currently scarce, apart from the fact that it will release in June.
