ONDC set to go live in 4 more cities this week

The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) is working vigorously to bring intercity logistics onto the network, which will facilitate buyers from multiple cities to place orders on the platform and scale up fast, senior executives told ET.

ONDC CEO T Koshy told ET, “By the end of this week, we expect to add at least four cities. Three of these cities are Chennai, Thrissur and Kannur. We may become ten from six. We are trying to organically build up. We are attempting 75- 100. We are putting that kind of pressure on our team. We will see a hockey stick graph rise in one year’s time.” The platform is bullish that it will go live in 100 cities by August, the network’s chief business officer Shireesh Joshi told ET.

Joshi added that once intercity logistics are available and seller applications are live in multiple locations then automatically, it can go live, “literally with a flick of a switch”. “From a buyer’s standpoint, even if there’s only one seller (for a certain product) in the country but buyers in 200 cities, if there are intercity logistics, people from those 200 cities can buy. We may even surpass the 100-cities mark,” Joshi said.

In April, ONDC launched a pilot in five cities – New Delhi, Bengaluru, Coimbatore, Bhopal and Shillong and went live in the sixth city of Lucknow in June.

“Right now, we are on track. Our sixth city opened on June 29. We placed a successful order that was delivered in Lucknow, so that has been added to our roster. Our initial start was measured and cautious because we were doing it for the first time but the scaling up is relatively easy,” he said.
